SOCIAL JUSTICE AND ENVIRONMENT LEADERS EDUCATE SCHOOL
Two of our leaders in Social Justice and The Environment led an assembly today with an informative PowerPoint about coltan and the impact the mining of coltan is having in Africa (The Republic of Congo).
The girls explained that coltan is mined in the Congo and showed the impact of mining both on the natural environment and on the lives of the children living there.
They concluded with ways we can support the Congolese people and the beautiful fauna and flora surrounding the Congo River.
The girls are setting up a recycling program to support this most worthy need.
I thought our families may appreciate the research and presentation from our two senior students, Jessica Moore and Sophia Thomas.
FAMILIES GATHER
You would probably not have predicted the above heading would gain such significance a little over one year ago.
We were delighted to have over 80 families represented at the Penance workshop held at St Peter’s on Wednesday evening from 6.00pm.
We hope our prevailing environment allows us to keep moving forward in our invitations for families to join us in partnership of our children’s education and significant celebrations.
Please see the article - Grade Parent - Family Get Togethers.
SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM
Students are being provided great choice in how to maximise their play periods.
There is much research to indicate the more constructive and engaged students are in play, the more likely their learning and well-being will be enhanced.
I have had the pleasure of walking around many play spaces this week and viewing how our students are interacting and engaging in lunchtime activities. Children were really enjoying:
The continuous opportunities provided through:
- The Dance Stage
- The Trike Track
- Handball, basketball, netball and volleyball courts
- Skipping Posts
- The Mud Kitchen
- The oval divided into spaces allowing children to choose touch football, cricket, soccer and organised running games (eg.Survivor Tag)
- The Fitness Circuit and Rock Climbing Walls
- The Sensory Space with hammocks, zip line, balance beams and teepees
- The Fairy Garden
- The Outdoor Library and Board Games space
- Four sandpits
- Synthetic Grass running spaces
- Indoor Library (a Book Club to begin soon)
And……...our staff, families and students now provide a number of more structured play and leisure options:
- Structured play timetable
2. Student-led lunch clubs/activities
3. Garden Club - From the School Garden to the School Office
YEAR 1 FAMILY GATHERING
Word on the street is the Year 1 families are gathering together on Saturday, March 13 at Lake Cathie.
This will be a great chance for families to connect, whilst little ones enjoy each other’s company and the beautiful surrounds.

MISSION
Incitare
On Tuesday, Mrs Cameron accompanied 17 Year 6 students to the St Agnes’ Youth Hub for Incitare 2021. There, they joined with other Year 6 students and the Year 10 Youth Ministry class from MacKillop College for a day of friendship, faith and fun! Incitare is part of the Proclaim Lismore student discipleship journey and means to stir up, incite, urge, spur, egg on - when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives we are incited to spread the good news to all we encounter. This one-day retreat involved various group processes and student discussion led by the MacKillop students. Students experienced faith nurturing activities and skilling for being faith leaders back at St Peter’s. Our St Peter’s students represented our school community with maturity and respect, they were a privilege to take out.
Fundraising Success
Chloe Owen, Alanna Walker, Isla Scaysbrook, Alina O'Brien and their many helpers achieved great success with their fundraising efforts, raising $100.00 !!! for Project Compassion. With each bracelet costing only 50c, that’s a lot of bracelets sold! Well done girls. You are certainly walking the path that Jesus invites us to walk.
Penance Workshop
The first of a series of four workshops to prepare students and their families for the Sacrament of Penance was held at St Peter’s on Wednesday night, with over 160 students and parents in attendance. A huge thank you to our Year 4 and 5 teachers, as well as to Geoff Leary, Karen Robson, Phoebe Morris and Leanne Kalchbauer for coming along to ensure this night ran smoothly and successfully.
Third Week of Lent
Next week we will move into the third week of Lent. This extract from the Parish E-News offers an excellent explanation of the three virtues at the heart of Lent:
- Prayer - we are drawn closer to God so that we are better able to realise our baptismal promise to live justly as Jesus teaches us.
- Fasting - we join in solidarity with the poor who often have no choice but to live without basic essentials.
- Almsgiving - we signal our commitment to justice as we are called to acts of service.
LEARNING
IMPROVING STUDENT WRITING - CASE MANAGEMENT MEETINGS
Mrs Kalchbauer, Mrs Morris, Mrs Doherty, Miss Robson and Mrs Cullen examine and discuss student writing.
This week St Peter’s staff began Case Management Meetings (CMMs) to support student learning and teacher professional development. CMMs bring teachers together for 20 minutes to analyse a sample of student work and then plan teaching strategies to improve learning. St Peter’s is focussing on improving student ability in Writing through the CMM process.
Each grade team nominates a student from our data wall. The classroom teacher presents student work samples and shares teaching strategies that have already been tried with the student. The CMM team discusses different strategies for the teacher to try and specific recommendations are recorded by the team and implemented by the teacher over the following weeks.
A follow up meeting is then scheduled and the teacher reports back on the success or failure of the recommended strategy using the student’s work as evidence. As the CMM cycle progresses, teachers gain insights into which teaching strategies are most effective in improving student writing.
St Peter’s teachers are looking forward to engaging in further CMMs as the year progresses and seeing our young writers learn, create and thrive.

Being Safe - Everyone, Everywhere, Everytime
This fortnight we have been learning about what ‘Being Safe’ looks like around our school.
Being Safe When Learning - We use equipment properly. This includes scissors, chromebooks, rulers and just about anything in our classrooms! - We sit safely on chairs to keep ourselves and others safe.
|
Being Safe in Wet Weather So far this term we have had a lot of wet weather at school! This can make us feel in the Yellow Zone. It’s especially important we make safe decisions on these days. - We need to listen to instructions given to our grade about where we can play - We sit and eat calmly in our areas. - We stay out of the rain whenever we can. - We choose to join in the activities offered, for example a movie, colouring, board games
|
Being Safe on the Playground - We sit when we are eating - We keep our hands and feet to ourselves at all times. - We run on the grass but always walk on the concrete. - We play on equipment sensibly and listen to our teachers. - We are kind and play fairly with those around us.
|
Being Safe During Emergency Procedures Throughout our school year we have several fire and lockdown drills. By using these skills we keep ourselves prepared for if there is ever a real emergency. During an evacuation - We line up in alphabetical order quickly and quietly - We move sensibly to our new location - We wait silently for our name to be marked off the role - We listen carefully to our teachers at all times - We remain calm
|
Being Safe on the Bus We pride ourselves on excellent bus behaviour at St Peter’s. - We follow teacher instructions and line up sensibly to get on the bus. - We sit properly on our seat, facing forward. - We keep our hands and feet to ourselves. - We sit quietly and chat to the person next to us. - We use our best manners when talking to the bus driver.

A big day at Winter Sports
A huge day of sport was held on Monday at our Zone Winter Sports trials. In terms of numbers, it’s our biggest event of the year with 65 students in attendance. We pride ourselves at St Peter’s in selecting students based on their PBS firstly and skill secondly. As always, all students displayed wonderful PBS values on the day. It was such a pleasure to take students away and play sports. A big thank you to Mrs Stewart, Mr Post and Miss McKenzie for your wonderful support and care of our kids throughout the day. Congratulations to Mr Murtagh on how he ran the boys soccer trial, as always, it was run with great professionalism and collaboration with school staff.
Congratulations to all students, and a special well done to the following students who will be representing the Hastings Zone at the Lismore Diocesan Winter Sports in Grafton, next Friday 12th March.

Our 1st major school carnival is ready to be run
On Wednesday March 10, we will have our school Cross Country Carnival. The day will be run very similar to 2020, that being, we will call age groups down one at a time from their classrooms. We will then separate the boys and girls and then each race will be conducted. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the carnival needs to look a little different. We can’t have mass gatherings for extended periods of time and we are unable to have families attend the event. As per last year, I will post videos and images of the events.
Age Championship trophies will be presented to the following age divisions: 8yrs, 9yrs, 10yrs, 11yrs, 12yrs. These divisions are also the selection process for our school team. The first six competitors for 9yrs and under, 10yrs, 11yrs, 12yrs age divisions and gender qualify for the Hastings Zone Carnival, which will be held at Bowraville.
Events will run approximately to the following times:
9.00am | 9 yrs - Girls/Boys | 1.5 km |
9.20am | 10 yrs - Girls/Boys | 2 km |
9.50am | Year 2 - 8 yrs Girls/Boys | 2 laps of Oval |
10.10am | Kinder - Girls/Boys | 250m |
10.30am | Year 1 - Girls/Boys | 500m |
11.30am | 11 yrs - Girls/Boys | 3 km |
12.00pm (noon) | 12 yrs - Girls/Boys | 3 km |
If wet, children need to bring old clothes, joggers to run in and a towel. If we need to postpone the carnival due to weather conditions, we will advise asap via our St Peter's Facebook Page link

Get Involved in the Program
School Banking Day is Wednesday
St Peter’s Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and an engaging way to help teach your child about money.
Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
You can open a Youth Saver Account for your child in one of two ways:
- Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
- In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, ie: driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit every Wednesday using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2021 School Banking program parent guide from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
Thank you
