We welcome back our students and families to Term 4, it’s hard to believe we are already in October! We have a busy term ahead with many fantastic events and activities to look forward to. Please remember to read Postman Pete and Compass notifications to make sure you have all of the details.
HAVE YOU NOTICED..
During the holidays, a long term project that we have been working on has been completed. If you have not yet seen, here are the photos of our new all weather structure in our carpark. We are confident that we will all benefit from a structure that will help with rain, sun and other weather conditions.ST PETER'S HOSPITALITY MASS THIS SUNDAY
20TH OCTOBER
St Peter’s Hospitality Mass is this Sunday 20th October from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. We would love to see as many families there as possible and our school choir will also be singing. Please bring a plate of food to share afterwards. A sausage sizzle will be provided.
SOCKTOBER !
Next week St Peter’s will celebrate Catholic Mission Month, otherwise known as “Socktober!” This year our goal is to support families in Timor-Leste facing health and wellness challenges.
In supporting Catholic Mission, we will help sustain and enrich the lives of vulnerable children in Timor-Leste by providing vital medicines and health support. At St Peter’s, students and teachers will be listening to and watching stories about life in Timor-Leste, and are invited to wear some wacky socks with their uniform and bring in a gold coin donation on Friday 25th October to help raise awareness and money for this vital cause.

LEARNING
PAT ASSESSMENTS - YEARS 2 - 6
During Weeks 1-3, our students in Years 2-6 will complete their ACER PAT Adaptive Mathematics Test. ACER’s Progressive Achievement approach is used in thousands of schools in Australia and around the world. The approach focuses on assessing and monitoring student growth over time and is underpinned by an understanding that students of the same age and in the same year of school can be at very different points in their learning and development.
These tests are designed to provide objective, norm-referenced information to teachers about their students’ skills and understandings in a range of key areas. The Mathematics test assesses students’ skill and understanding in the six strands of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Statistics and Probability. The Reading Test assesses students’ reading comprehension skills, vocabulary knowledge and spelling.
Why do schools use PAT tests?
- They provide a measure of student achievement in each learning area.
- There is a common achievement scale for all tests within a learning area.
- They are mapped to the Australian Curriculum.
- They provide overall descriptions of the types of skills mastered and those still to be developed based on test performance.
- They can be used to inform teaching and learning and to assist in planning effective and targeted learning programs.
A healthy education system has multiple assessments (large-scale and small), each designed to suit the purpose at hand. Standardised tests are an imperfect measure by nature, and cannot be expected to measure children’s learning as competently as the teacher who spends hours with them every day.
On the other hand, individual teachers’ judgments cannot map learning across the entire education system. We may be experts on the progress of our students, but we cannot compare that progress with students in the school down the road, let alone a school in another state or territory. A standardised assessment provides the best birds-eye view of where the system is working, and where additional attention is required.
If you have any questions about the ACER testing please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher for further clarification.
ENHANCING FAITH THROUGH SPORT
BOWLING JOSH !
Congratulations to Joshua Harris, who competed for Polding at the NSWPSSA Cricket this week in Armidale. I will have more information in next week's Postman Pete’s.
SUMMER SPORTS SCHOOL TRIALS
A huge thank you to Mrs Kipreotis, Miss Fowler and Mrs Ryan for conducting our girls and boys touch football trials this week. We are certainly very fortunate to have so many staff members who have a wonderful knowledge of the sport and the skills. We had over 60 students attend the trials which is just fantastic to see. Thank you again to all the students who came and trialled and got out and active. The teams of 10 boys and 10 girls will compete at the Hastings Zone Summer Sports Touch Football in early November.
ELECTIVE SPORTS KICKS - OFF
This week, Years 3 - 6 kicked off their Elective Sports Program and we have seen over 350 students get out and active and challenge themselves in a wide variety of sports. This program wouldn’t be possible without the amazing work of Mrs Grant and Mrs Hickson in the office. The work behind the scenes to set up each program, and to run the online registration is very time-consuming and I can’t thank them enough for their support. This week, I had a great time at Springloaded where students rolled, jumped and cartwheeled!
Years 5 and 6 Enjoying Springloaded!
GOAL !
Next week, we have Kindy kicking off their Sporting Schools Program on Wednesday where they will participate in Soccer. We also have Years 1, 2 and 3 participating in several other Sporting Schools Programs over the Term. We are thankful to the Sporting Schools Program for the allocation of $3,500.00 in grant money to give our kids an opportunity to get out and active.
SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL
THURSDAY 21ST NOVEMBER
During Week 2, all years 3-6 students will be given a competitive School Swimming note. If your child intends to compete in the competitive section of our School Swimming carnival on Thursday, November 21, they must complete all details, nominate the events they would like to compete in and return by the due date. If any details still need to be completed, the form will be sent back to the student so that the missing information can be filled in. If your child isn’t planning to go in the competitive section, there is no need to return the form. Rather, they will still attend the carnival and participate in the non-competitive section of our swimming carnival.
This carnival acts as our trial for our School Team to the Hastings Zone Swimming Championships in 2025. Individual awards will also be awarded to students 8-12 years of age. Points are also given towards the Year 6 Sports Award.
SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL - FAMILY HELP
Our School Swimming Carnival is always a huge event. In order to run a wonderful carnival, we do require the support of family members to assist in the area of timekeeping. If you can assist on the day or for a couple of hours, we would love your assistance. If you would like to assist, please send me an email: jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au
SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL - YEARS 1 AND 2 STUDENTS
As part of our School Swimming Carnival, we have opportunities for students in Years 1 and 2 to compete in the competitive section if they are turning 8 and 9 years of age in 2025. If you feel that your child or children can swim 50m confidently, could you please email me on jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au and I will email you the paperwork to compete on the day.
