CHANGES TO LEADERSHIP DURING TERM 3
During Term 3, Miss Karen Robson will be away due to caring for her mum who is unwell. This has led to some changes in our leadership structure to support the school and our students. Mr Michael Gallery has stepped up into Acting Assistant Principal Learning & Teaching in her absence, followed by our Leaders of Learning Natalie McKenzie and Rachael Cullen assisting in additional time to support staff with Mr Gallery’s role. Mrs Kristy Robb has also needed to have leave for the first half of the term, so her role is being supported by other staff members to ensure coverage of roles. At all times, children are at the centre of these decisions, so any changes in the classroom have involved careful staff consideration and consistent and tight timetabling to ensure learning is not interrupted.
ATTENDANCE
The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools have updated the procedures for monitoring and supporting schools to promote student attendance. Every school day builds upon the previous one, making it essential for students to attend regularly. Regular attendance is crucial as it fosters resilience and enables students to form vital social connections. Across all NSW education systems the expected level of student attendance is above 95%, and we aim to support all of our students to achieve this.
If your child’s attendance is below 90% you may receive a COMPASS communication in the coming weeks. We acknowledge that there may be many reasons for absences and you may have already provided information to the school about why your child has been away. However, this communication is to ensure all parents are aware that their child’s attendance is currently at or under 90%.
We believe that by working together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Please ensure you contact the school if you would like any support with your child’s attendance.
MISSION
YOUTH CLUB
St Peter’s is lucky enough to have two of the Lismore Diocese Regional Ministry Officers visit our school every second Tuesday! Jacob and Jaz, ex-students of St Joseph’s Regional and MacKillop Colleges, spend time in classrooms supporting the students in their learning and faith development, and run our CSYMA Youth Club at Lunch 2 in the Don Farrell Hall. Youth Club is open to students in Years 3 to 6 on an optional basis. Those that choose to come get to play some fun games and share in a prayer experience designed to help them grow closer to Jesus. Youth ministry is an integral part of the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools and includes the ever popular WILDFIRE Worship band, and a number of Regional Ministry Officers based all over the Diocese working in all of our Catholic schools. Young people respond incredibly positively when young adults share their faith journey, encouraging them to follow Jesus and live a better and more fulfilling life. We appreciate Jacob and Jaz immensely!
TELL THEM FROM SURVEY PARENT FEEDBACK
You spoke, we listened! Each week this Term we will share a key message from the parent ‘tell them from me’ surveys conducted at the start of Term 2.
BOOK WEEK PARADE + GRANDPARENTS DAY
This year Grandparents are invited to our Book Week dress up parade as well as families, followed by fruit break and a Celebration of the Word to honour Grandparents.
FREE WEBINAR
DEALING WITH SCHOOL ANXIETY
This webinar explains why school anxiety happens and why anxiety isn’t the problem, but how our response can cause trouble for our children. It also highlights three things that helps our kids stay connected to their education and is a highly worthwhile listen for all parents of ALL school age children. Listen at your leisure for free until 11th September.
LEARNING
BULLYING NO WAY WEEK
MONDAY 12TH AUGUST
GO AUSTRALIA !!
Year One have been very excited watching the highlights of the Olympic Games in class. They watched the lighting of the Olympic torch which symbolises the beginning of the games. Year One then made their own Olympic torches. What beautiful and bright creations Year One!
NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK
National Science Week is running next week from 10th-16th August. At St Peter’s students are actively engaged in Science lessons, varying from animal adaptations to manipulations of matter. We would like to showcase Year 3 and Year 4 science this week leading up to National Science Week.
HARNESS THE ENERGY - YEAR 3 SCIENCE
In Year 3 this Term we have been learning about different energy sources. This week we made a solar-powered oven to explore the use of renewable energy. I enjoyed working across the grade with my friends and having fun making the oven. We got to enjoy a melted Mars bar at the end of the day as we successfully created our ovens using foil, cling wrap, pizza boxes and lots of tape. Lewis Gallo - 3 Blue |
We made a solar pizza oven to explore to see how solar panels work because we are learning about energy this Term. We put a mars bar in the centre of our solar pizza boxes and left it in the sun for a couple of hours and our mars bar melted into yummy gooey, squishy treats. Marley Tattersall - 3 Blue |
HERE COMES THE SUN - YEAR 4 SCIENCE
Science - Sun and Shadows
In Year 4 we are investigating shadows and how they work. As the earth revolves around the sun, shadows are created at different times of the day. As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west the shadows the sun creates change direction. At 9:00am our shadows were quite long, facing west. At 12:00pm our shadows were short because the sun was directly above creating smaller shadows. The shadows that were created when it was 2:00pm were facing east and a bit shorter than when they were at 9:00am. Isaac Thompson - 4 Green |
This week in Year 4 we learnt about the sun and shadows. We learnt that shadows move around the day depending on where the sun is. We went down to the netball court at the bottom of the oval at 9:00am, 12:00pm and 2:00pm and used chalk to draw around our shadows. We realised how the shadows became longer and shorter and were in different directions at different times depending on the sun moving in a westerly direction. Amelie Abi-Saab 4 Red |
MUSIC - RHYTHM TO RECOVERY DRUMMING
Discover the next benefits of the Rhythm to Recovery Drumming Program for St Peter's students, developing confidence and improved communication skills through the power of rhythm.
Develops Confidence
To be successful, drummers must learn to play dynamically: loud and soft. The act of playing a loud beat takes guts and confidence. In addition, drummers must possess a growth mindset. That is, you must believe that you can learn challenging parts by starting slow and breaking them down. Learning drums challenges you to break complex tasks into manageable parts. This is a skill that carries over in many areas of life. Believing you’re able to learn difficult material is crucial to overcome obstacles, both in music and in life.
Improve Communication Skills
Students with musical training communicate better with peers, are more empathetic, and get lots of practice expressing ideas without using words. Drumming also teaches you to read non-verbal cues, which can help you learn to read between the lines.
ENHANCING FAITH THROUGH SPORT
“The South Sudan Olympic Basketball team has been fascinating to follow. They are the youngest country in the world, have no indoor basketball courts and had a civil war that displaced millions. Yet their basketball team has had the opportunity to play and got their first win ever at the Olympics against Puerto Rico because they have been funded by Luol Deng, the South Sudanese former NBA great, out of his own pockets for 4 years.
They had no funding for flights, hotels and other accommodations that are routine for every other team that is playing basketball in the Olympics. Deng stepped in and made sure they could.
What a story and I can only imagine how proud this team is making all the South Sudanese. That’s the beauty of sports. They aren’t just an escape, they are a beacon of hope.” Robert Griffen III

SUPER SATURDAY
Super Saturday (could also be any day or night of the week) is a tradition that extends back many years. It is a very unique initiative to our school. This tradition involves our staff, where available, coming into the community to watch your child play in a sporting event. This might be finals of soccer, netball. It might also be one of their final games of rugby league for the season. It might also be motorbike racing or gymnastics. For our staff, we get to cheer on and support your child in a different setting. Please feel free to email the date, location, time and fields/court etc of a particular event and I will send this through to staff. We can’t wait to see your kids getting out and active. My email address is jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au

Sport Questions?
Sport is very BIG at St Peter’s and every week there are many opportunities that we offer. Each year, we have a new cohort who enter our Pathway Sports, as well as many new families. Due to so many sports on offer, it can become confusing. Please feel free to contact me and I can hopefully assist: jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au

Last Friday St Peter’s students and our school community enjoyed a full day of cultural activities to celebrate NAIDOC week with a focus on the theme ‘Keep the fire burning, black, loud and proud’.
Our day began with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country delivered by Uncle Bill O’Brien. It was wonderful to have families visiting in the morning session to participate in the liturgy. The students enjoyed cultural activities throughout the remainder of the day - rob the emu nest, face painting, totem game, wristbands and bush tucker tasting.
We would like to thank our special guests: Uncle Bill O’Brien for the Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. Our amazing Indigenous Education Workers from our Hastings cluster - Tegan, Josh, Nikki, Lisa, Wes, Lynda, Sarina and Monique. Special thanks to our visiting Indigenous students from MacKillop and Newman College for assisting with activities and to all of our school staff for their support. What a great day!
We would like to thank our Indigenous Education Worker, Leanne Parsons for organising the day with so many activities to assist our students in building their understanding and experience of Indigenous perspectives and culture.
