BEGINNING OF YEAR REMINDERS
We are so pleased to have started the year with our families coming into school and being part of our community. We look forward to many events where families can be with us and celebrate the wonderful things at St Peter’s.
There are a couple of important things that we need to remind families around child protection and safety requirements, as keeping your children safe is our first priority.
GREEN SPACE:
- Before school - unless parents and carers are signed in for an event or other reason, they can only go as far as the first “green space” extends, which is the area from the admin building to the basketball court. This is convenient for Kinder and Year 1 families to be able to take their children to their bag areas, but doesn’t extend to the years further through the school.
- After school - unless parents and carers are signed in for an event or other reason, they can stand on the green space if picking up at 3:00pm, and if coming in after the first part of pickup come to the steps outside of Kindergarten up until 3:30pm.
GATE ENTRIES AND EXITS:
While we understand that the carpark is a busy space and families prefer not to walk a long way to and from cars, these are our processes:
- Before school - entry and exit is via the gate nearest the crossing and we ask that parents and carers use the crossing for safety.
- After school - entry in the afternoon is via the gate to the left of the admin entrance from 2:55pm, and exit is via the gate on the other side of the admin block (near the crossing). This is to ease the pedestrian traffic congestion as all bus pick ups go through the first gate.
Please support this process and follow the circular flow through. We will increase signage shortly to ensure this is clear.
MISSION
PANCAKE TUESDAY
Staff and students celebrated Shrove Tuesday this week with a pancake feast! Thank you Year 6 leaders for assisting with the organisation of this day!
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a period of reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal. On Wednesday morning before school, Mrs Cameron and Mrs Koning attended Mass at St Agnes’ Church, where ashes were blessed and distributed. These ashes, symbolizing repentance and mortality, were then brought back to the school community.
Each grade participated in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy, where we gathered to reflect on the significance of the Lenten journey. Each person received a cross made with ashes on their forehead, marking the beginning of our journey through Lent. Lent invites us to follow the example of Jesus, contemplating his life, teachings, and ultimate sacrifice.
During Lent, we are encouraged to ponder not only the joys and successes in our lives but also the struggles and challenges we face. It is a time for asking: What brings me joy? What brings me sorrow? Where do I find compassion in my heart, and how can I extend it to others?
Moreover, Lent is a call to action, prompting us to consider the ways we can make a difference, both personally and collectively. This may involve acts of kindness and charity towards others, as well as a renewed commitment to caring for the Earth and all living beings.
PROJECT COMPASSION
During Lent, the St Peter’s community supports Caritas’ Project Compassion, an initiative providing aid to vulnerable populations, promoting social justice and fostering community development. The theme for Project Compassion is once again, For All Future Generations. This year we share the stories of three women from the Philippines, Malawi and Samoa. Though they face very different challenges in their day-to-day lives, they are all united by their dream of creating a better tomorrow for themselves and for all future generations. During Lent, our challenge is to respond to these stories courageously, with a yes to God’s call to us all, to act for social and ecological justice.
Each class will have a Project Compassion box on their prayer table for the duration of Lent. Students and staff are invited to donate their loose change by placing it in the Project Compassion box. All money raised will be combined with the funds from Colours for Caritas and donated to help those in need, just like the women in the stories.
Watch the stories here.

LEARNING
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Help your child to learn that going to school on time, every day is important.
Reinforcing the idea that attending school regularly is crucial for a positive school experience. Foster a love for learning by encouraging your child's natural curiosity.
Help your child to see school as a place to explore new ideas, discover interests, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. Foster positive social connections at school by encouraging friendships. Knowing that they have friends to look forward to, can motivate children to attend school regularly.

BE LIKE MIKE
I was very fortunate to be at the Polding Boys Basketball Trials last Friday, and I was so impressed by the efforts and the way Mandrake, Sam and Steele conducted themselves. I spoke at Monday’s Assembly and said in my ten years with CSNSW, this trial was the most talented I have come across.

Mrs Cullen and Ms Wotherspoon will be at Netball, Mrs Loveday and Mrs Baird will be at Soccer and Mr Arkinstall will be at Rugby League 11’s and Opens. Families are more than welcome to attend the events. If the event is postponed, it will be posted on the St Peter’s Sport Facebook page at 6:30am.

We wish all athletes the very best. A huge thank you to the families who indicated they could assist at the carnival in a timekeeping role. When you arrive, I will chat with you and let you know our roles. Mr Post and Mr Arkinstall will be the teachers on the day. If the event is postponed, it will be posted on the St Peter’s Sport Facebook page at 6:30am.

Happy Library Lovers’ Day! Want to share the love of reading with your child? Gifting them a library book is more than just a present; it’s an invitation to embark on a lifelong journey of discovery and imagination. Here at St Peter’s we celebrate the joy of reading, understanding its profound impact on our students’ development.
On Wednesday, students celebrated National Library Lovers’ Day at our school library and were provided the opportunity to share all the things that they loved about their library. Primary students were also able to go on a “Blind Date” with a book where they could borrow from a selection of novels based solely on the opening lines of the story. It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic about their love for books and their Library!
PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, rather, a challenge for entrants to read, more books, and to read from a wider choice of titles. The Challenge is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 at St Peter’s.
The Challenge opens for students on 26th February, 2024 and concludes 23rd August, 2024.
- New participants cannot be uploaded until the Challenge begins.
- Students who have previously participated at St Peter’s should have a current login.
- Parents of new students wishing to participate or requiring further information will need to contact Mrs Amanda Ayres: amanda.ayres@lism.catholic.edu.au to arrange login details.
- Office staff and class teachers are unable to enrol students in the Challenge.
All relevant information relating to the challenge, including an area where parents/students are able to search the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklists, can be found on the website below:
NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2024
Many of the titles on the book lists are available in our school library for borrowing and our local town library is also a great resource.
