KINDER 2022 - IMPORTANT DATES
We are looking forward to welcoming our new Kindergarten children to St Peter's through this term.
The following dates have been set to help orientate our little people and families to a successful start in Kindergarten next year.
To keep our transition sessions small, we have split Transition 1 into 2 groups. Transition 2 will have the whole 2022 kinder group join together. Parents have received an invitation regarding the following dates.
Transition 1: Monday 8th November - Kinder children A-L - 9.00am to 10.15am
Transition 1: Thursday 11th November - Kinder children M-Z - 9.00am to 10.15am
Children will need to bring a clearly labelled drink bottle.
Transition 2: Monday 6th December - All Kindergarten 2022 Children attend 9.00am to 11.30am
Children will need to bring a drink bottle, hat and small snack, all clearly labelled.
Parent Information Evening: Monday 6th December 2021, 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the Don Farrell Hall. Kinder 2022 Bookpacks will be available for collection at this evening.
MAINTAINING STANDARDS - SCHOOL UNIFORM INCLUDES HAIR CUTS
It is really important during the transition into a new school uniform, that we maintain current standards of presentation.
A number of boys have recently come to school with haircuts that are bordering on ‘extreme’ (a hard concept to determine, but for this sake…...something quite different from the regular or ordinary).
Haircuts where the sides are shaved very close to the head and the top of the head is left with thick hair growth may be suited to some contexts or a long holiday period, but not in the day to day presentation of our school uniform.
Please check with your teachers, Ms Karen Robson, Mrs Rebecca Cameron or myself if you are planning something different from a ‘regulation cut’ and we will let you know if it is starting to move into the ‘extreme’ space.
Thanks for your support.
MAKE A FACE - FAKE A LAUGH
Good descriptive feedback helping in the learning process.
As part of the Lynn Sharrett Learning Collaborative, staff and students have been exploring the value of providing descriptive feedback to enhance the learning process.
Students were invited to break into pairs and attempt the following exercise:
- One of the pair was required to pull a face and the second person fake a laugh.
After discussing what descriptive feedback is and how to facilitate good descriptive feedback, students were then given time to isolate and repeat the above exercise whilst providing and acting on good descriptive feedback to improve impact.
We captured some of the improved results.
CLASSES SOON TO BE ALLOCATED - CLASS PLACEMENTS 2022
Teachers will soon be organising classes for 2022. This is an important and complex process as teachers aim to create 2 or 3 balanced groups, depending on which year level. Teachers look at social supports/sensitivities, assessment data, peer dynamics, learning and behavioural needs, the ratio of boys and girls etc to make up classes.
If you believe that teachers need to consider something additional or specific for your child, please make this known via email to the Principal to the following email address
pmacp-attendance@lism.catholic.edu.au by Wednesday, 10 November. (Please do not send your requests to our school email address.)
Please understand that requests from previous years will not be referred to and late responses are particularly difficult to consider.
STUDENTS TO CHECK PARENTS/CARERS SURVEY HOMEWORK
Next week we have assured all students that they have no written homework through the week. Apart from their reading commitment, their task is only to check that parents/carers complete the associated survey.
The survey will help our school assess families' perceptions of our current culture and inform our planning through to 2022.
The survey will only take 2–3 minutes and provides us family feedback.
Family Feedback Survey
Please complete by Friday 29th October
Exuro Next Wednesday
Exuro (Latin for “on fire”) is a student discipleship formation program for Year 5 students aimed at strengthening their Catholic faith and keeping the fire and passion of Proclaim Lismore Students alive in Parish Primary schools.
With the cancellation of Exuro for Year 5 students again in 2021, the Exuro retreat program and its resources are being made available to schools for local implementation. St Peter’s will be holding Exuro next Wednesday 27 October.
The theme for Exuro is: Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith and purity. – 1 Timothy 4:12
We are looking forward to spending this special day with Year 5 as they begin to transition to being the leaders of our school.
Socktober Event Day Next Friday
This year St Peter’s partnered with Catholic Mission by participating in Socktober. Our students were encouraged to connect with young people experiencing challenges in the developing world by setting themselves a number of Socktober goals and seeking sponsorship for each goal achieved. Next Friday, 29th October, we will be celebrating the culmination of Socktober with an event day. Students are invited to wear their wacky socks to school where they will be participating in a kick-off using their own soccer balls made with recycled materials. Sponsorship collected can be sent into school on this day or made online using the St Peter’s Fundraising Page:
UNSW ICAS RESULTS
Some of our Primary students recently participated in the UNSW Global ICAS Assessments. ICAS Assessments are designed to recognise academic excellence, students are assessed on their ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. Due to lockdowns, they were unable to complete all ICAS assessments before the end of Term, however, they have all been rescheduled for this term.
Before we went into lockdown we were able to complete the Digital Technologies Assessment.
This week we would like to congratulate the following students for their achievement:
Distinction | James Dunn | Year 3 |
Jakob Pol | Year 5 | |
Jack Hartley | Year 6 | |
Credit | Judd Charet | Year 4 |
Flynn Pociask | Year 4 | |
Paige Goldie | Year 6 |
BUS SAFETY
Many of our students travel on a bus to and from school. Over the next few weeks we will share some simple safety tips to ensure your child is safe on the bus. You can access more information about keeping children safe around school zones at NSW government site Safety Town.
Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at school!
Here are some tips for keeping your children and others safe during drop off and pick up times during the school week:-
- Make sure your children are fastened in the correct child seat for their age and size and that it is correctly fitted.
- Observe the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone and look out for children who may be about.
- Watch for flashing lights on buses. The flashing lights let you know that children are crossing or about to cross. A 40km/h speed limit is in place around flashing lights.
Always park and turn legally. Manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns are dangerous during busy school drop off and pick up times.
STEM MAD Competition
Last term, a group of Year 6 students entered the national STEM MAD Competition. Student teams were invited to design a product, service or innovation to Make A Difference (MAD) to others or the environment. Our teams worked hard on their projects all term, thinking of an idea that could make a difference in our local area and worldwide. Their main areas of concern were pollution in our waterways, electricity consumption and domestic violence. These students were:
Noah Pociask | Joey Thompson | Pip Eakin | Grace Dahlenburg |
Olivia Gridley | Amelia Heery | Daniel Zhong | William Whicker |
Aiden Wadwell | Nate Radford | Asha Lowrey | Madison Munro |
Semester Reports - Parent Portal
Semester Reports ... delivered differently!
A reminder for Parents and Carers
School Semester Reports will no longer be sent home in paper form at the end of each semester. Instead they will be available in digital form via a Parent Portal Login!
If you have not already done so please register NOW ... in readiness for our Semester 2 reports!
Parent Portal Login
The Parent Portal is a secure web based application which contains information about the school and your child including calendar, semester reports and NAPLAN results.
If you don’t already have a Parent Portal login it is a simple task to create one ... please see Creating an account in the Parent Portal
For security reasons the username for this account must be your email address recorded at the school.
Once an account has been created, parents will be able to access the Parent Portal at anytime via http://parent.lism.catholic.edu.au/ - this link is also available on SZapp as well as our school website.
If you do not have an email address which is known to the school or you have changed your email address or provider please contact the school office to update your details.
For those parents with children in high school (MacKillop/Regional and/or Newman Colleges) you may already be using the Parental Portal. One simple login will give parents access to all of their childrens’ past reports plus future ones as they are complete. Just use your existing Parent Portal Login to access! The Parent Portal will show reports for both primary and high school students (ensure your email address is the same at all schools.)
Hard copies of reports will only be provided upon request.
Meet Another Polding Representative for 2021
Year: 6 Green
Polding Representative Sport: Cross Country
Other St Peters Representative Sports: Cross Country, Athletics, Swimming, Soccer
Favourite Sports: Cross Country, Athletics, Swimming and Mountain Bike Riding
What is your most memorable Sporting memory at St Peter’s and Why?
My most memorable sporting memory was winning School Cross Country in Year 4 and achieving Age Champion. The year before I had placed 4th at school and was lucky enough to compete at Zone and Dio. That was as far as I went, and I had never had the feeling of a win. From then on, I just found my passion and trained hard. To win my first Age Champion in 2019 was such a great moment and I was proud of myself.
It was also memorable making the Cross Country Polding team this year and winning a GOLD medal at Polding with my Lismore Diocese teammates. To be given the chance to compete at NSWPSSA Cross Country was an awesome feeling even though it was cancelled.
Do you have any advice to give future sports stars at St Peter’s?
A quote that I always keep in my mind is:
Success isn’t always about greatness.
It’s about consistency.
Consistent hard work gains success.
Greatness will come.
Who do you admire to be like as a sporting person and why?
Peter Bol, Australian middle-distance runner. I admire Bol’s training ethics, I admire his positive mindset towards racing and competing, and I admire his attitude win or loss. He is a fierce competitor who leaves nothing in the tank and such an inspiration.
What are your future sporting plans?
For the last few years, I have had my parents coach me and a local coach 1-2 days a week. A few months ago I teamed up with my current coach Brad at Team Gazelle Running who is based in the Hunter Region. We discuss my goals and events coming up along with what I would like to achieve. He creates my programs monthly which he assesses my training results via my Garmin uploads on Training Peaks. I have always wanted a full-time coach/mentor and a consistent training regime, and I am grateful to my parents for that. As for my sporting plans, I want to continue to train hard and give myself the chance to represent NSW at the Australian championships and maybe even wear the green and gold in Brisbane in 2032, whether that be in middle distance on the track or long distance.
Thank you Preston ......
Summer Sports
Due to COVID restrictions, the proposed Hastings Zone Summer Sports Trials won’t occur in 2021. Due to this, certain sports will now skip the Zone trial and go through to Lismore Diocese Trials. Basketball will now have certain criteria placed on it for selections. This may mean that only Representative basketballers or weekly competition basketballers may only trial at Diocese level. We are waiting on confirmation from the Lismore Diocese of the criteria. I spoke to all basketballers early this week and gave them permission to trial for Touch Football. This is because Touch Football at this stage, is the only Summer Sport without specific criteria for selection.
Winter Sports
Shortly, we will be calling for registration for the 2022 Winter Sports Zone Trial. The sports for Years 4 and 5 will be: Rugby League, Rugby Union, Hockey, Netball and Soccer. Trials will occur at school for all events and as always, teams will be selected primarily on each child’s PBS Values and lastly on their sporting skills. There will be selection criteria for certain sports.
