SRC CONFIRM 2ND FOUNTAIN OF COLD WATER AND ‘STREETSCAPING’ TRIKE TRACK
This week, the SRC confirmed the very popular requests from our student community to introduce a 2nd cold water fountain and the building of a ‘streetscape’ for the current trike track.
The SRC under the facilitation of Mr Post, met this week to confirm the incorporation of both above initiatives along with another 2 requests from the student body.
Mr Leary has been asked by the SRC to follow up installing a cold water fountain in front of the Year 1 toilets so smaller children have access to a cold water source, particularly with the summer months not far away.
The SRC gave a comprehensive report this afternoon at Assembly about these particular requests from the students and the follow-up that has now been put in place.
A big thanks to the student leaders and to Mr Post for encouraging their great input and capacity to listen, plan and implement student ideas.
A BIG THANKS TO THE PBS TEAM
A big thank you to the PBS team for organising and supporting our Winter Warmers Day.
A great success with their highlighting of the The Good Box
I apologise for the mixed message (‘winter warmers over uniform’ converging with ‘all winter warmer wear,’) which may have disadvantaged some children remaining in their uniform for the day.
This took nothing away from the generous and enthusiastic spirit of all children and families supporting a wonderful appeal – thank you.
MISSION
Helping our community
It was with great pleasure that I delivered the generous donations of food and care items to the Port Macquarie Neighborhood Centre for distribution to our local homeless and at-need community. The volunteers were very touched by the generosity of our St Peter’s families and assured me that the items will go a long way in providing comfort to our brothers and sisters in need.
The school purchased 26 Donation Packages from the "Good Box" to be delivered to the Homeless using our 'Gold Coin' donations from Winter Warmers Day last Friday of $566.00 !!!!
It was also a touching moment to deliver some beautiful letters that Year 5 wrote for the homeless in our local community. These went to New Horizons, an organisation that holds regular bbqs for the homeless, who will distribute them over the coming weeks. Once again, they were very appreciative of the care and concern for others shown by our St Peter’s community.
A massive thank you to all involved! See below for some examples of our letters:
Upcoming Sacrament of First Holy Communion
St Agnes’ Parish is currently working with parish schools to schedule dates and times for the sacrament of First Holy Communion. This sacrament will be offered to Year 4 students, as well as any students from older grades who have missed out in previous years. Information will be coming out in the coming weeks via Peta Rourke at St Agnes’ Parish and in upcoming editions of Postman Pete. Stay tuned!
LEARNING
WHY IS PLAY IMPORTANT?
In our current climate where so many things are uncertain and changing daily, one thing we do know is the importance of play. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. It helps children develop new competencies that lead to enhanced confidence and the resiliency they will need to face future challenges.
You will often hear educators use the terms ‘play-based learning’ or discuss the importance of play in the early years of school. Play creates opportunities for adventure, growth and learning. It supports and inspires natural curiosity, eagerness to learn and a love of communication with others.
Here are five reasons why play is important in the early years:
- Developing secure attachments: Through play children begin to foster secure attachments to their peers, families and educators. Strong relationships are the key to children feeling safe, secure and supported, which impacts their learning, happiness and self-esteem. Parents are a child’s first teacher and much of that teaching happens through play.
- The effect of play on brain development: Play has intellectual and cognitive benefits for the brain and it is believed that play can in fact shape the structural development of the brain.
- Development of learning skills: Through play children develop important learning and life skills such as exploring, identifying, negotiating, risk-taking and imagining.
- Speech and language development through play: During play children are watching, listening, exploring and imitating. Even when your child is playing silently, they are learning important information and exposed to new vocabulary that they will carry with them and use later.
- The ability to regulate their behaviour: As children play they are learning skills such as how to concentrate on a task, how to take turns and how to share. In turn these will aid them in regulating their behaviour and emotions.
Play leads to enhanced school adjustment and, most importantly, a love of learning. When children play and learn new things they discover that learning can be fun and go on to view learning as something enjoyable. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Above all, play is a simple joy that is a cherished part of childhood.

In terms of Pathway Sport, things are still in a holding pattern. A number of sports have been postponed to Term 4 to hopefully enable the sport to be completed.
Super Friday and Super Saturday
Week 1 of Super Friday and Super Saturday was a wonderful experience. Mr Leary, Mrs Mowle, Miss McKenzie and I watched two games of Rugby Union last Friday night. In the first game of the night, the Under 10’s Grand Final was between the Vikings and the Pirates, both teams had a number of St Peter’s students, which was fantastic to see. In the second game of the night, the Hogs won their Grand Final in a thriller. The Hogs team was full of St Peter’s students and they showed great resilience and determination to win.
On Saturday, I attended a Year 3 Netball match. The girls played very well as a team and it was great to see our future netball stars in action. I then travelled to see the “Rabbits” who are a Year 1 Soccer Team in action. Mrs Kalchbauer and Mrs Morris were also at the game. The girls were so excited to see their Year 1 Teachers, they nearly missed the start of the game! The girls played really well, and again, it was great to see our future soccer stars.
A huge thank you to all families who get their kids out and active each weekend.
Super Saturday continues
Week 2 of Super Saturday continues this weekend. If your child is playing in a special sporting event, please feel free to send me an email jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au or post your child’s event on the St Peter’s Sports Facebook page and I will let staff know.

Week 2 of Elective Sport
Week 2 of Elective Sports, and students again had a great time at the wide range of sports being offered. I attended Ten Pin Bowling with Years 3 and 4, and it was so much fun seeing students cheering and watching pins being knocked over. Their PBS behaviours were outstanding and an absolute pleasure to take out of the school.

Book Week 2021
“Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”
The restrictions around visitors to our school have prompted us to rethink how we can celebrate Book Week. We will still have a display of our Short-listed books, which will be available for teachers to share with students, and hopefully we will be able to invite you to attend our dress up parade at a later date to be advised.
During Book Week (Week 7) and the preceding weeks, we are inviting you to share a photo of you and your child/ren reading a favourite book, and to complete a short blurb about the book and why you and your children love to read. Older students may like to submit a review of their book instead.
Please send in photos and your short blurb to pmacp@lism.catholic.edu.au.
We look forward to sharing your family’s reading experience.
Suggested pro forma to accompany the photo:
Child’s name:
Title of the book:
We love this book because … ( approximately 20-30 words)
Older students might like to submit a picture of the Library book cover instead with an accompanying 20-30 word review, which I will use to promote the book.
Premier's Reading Challenge
Due to so many students in the Greater Sydney area being impacted by the current lockdown, the Premier’s Reading Challenge finish date has been extended until Friday September 3rd.

Consent Education Review CSNSW
Respectful Relationships Parent/Carer Survey
Thank you to the 168 parents/carers who completed the Respectful Relationships Survey in Term 2 of this year. Parents/carers were asked two questions:
- Respectful relationships and consent education are being taught in school. How can our Catholic schools better support our children and young people in this area?
- Our children and young people need both their families and schools to help support them in their understanding of consent and respectful relationships. How can our families and Catholic schools work together to better develop their understanding in this area?
The key themes to emerge from survey responses included:
- The need for explicit teaching across the curriculum and a whole school approach that focused on developing a culture of respect within the school community.
- Improved communication with parents about consent and relationship education curriculum content to allow parents to effectively support children’s learning and development at home.
- The use of high-quality external providers for students and parents.
Key actions that the Lismore Catholic Schools Office will undertake include:
- Developing a set of guiding principles that will provide an effective and consistent framework for consent and respectful relationships education in the Diocese of Lismore. This will include the importance of student and parent voice.
- To improve communication to parents and carers and explore parent and community respectful relationship and consent education opportunities.
- To investigate priority areas for curriculum resource development and teacher education.
