STAYING A STEP AHEAD - OUR POTENTIAL COVID OUTBREAK RESPONSE
This week we have received significant communications from our Catholic Schools Office (CSO) in Lismore assisting us to prepare for a potential COVID-19 outbreak.
We are very appreciative of the support from our Lismore office and our local Parish in guiding Schools to develop a comprehensive yet clear plan to respond if a local outbreak were to occur. The CSO has outlined 3 Tiers for a potential outbreak and we have included the likely school response to assist families in the face of a potential outbreak:
- Tier 1 – Confirmed case which requires contact tracing and potential closure of school or workplace:
School response - if notified out of school hours
- Text message/email to advise all staff and families of the situation and outcome.
School response - if notified during school hours
- School is placed in Amber lockdown (Students remain in classes, classes continue, no one leaves or enters school).
- The CSO (in communication with NSW Public Health Unit) will then advise the school on the preferred method and timing of school evacuation.
- Evacuation will be implemented in a COVID safe manner
- Families will be contacted by text and email.
- Families will be organised at School entry (with social distancing and mask wearing) to enter and collect children and return directly home.
- Parents/carers will not be able to collect any other children other than their family members.
The school will continue to communicate to families regarding length of school closure, learning at home, possible support for vulnerable families and any other details we feel may assist until a return to school occurs.
REMINDER - Please ensure mobile numbers, email addresses and emergency contacts are up to date. Please contact the school office if your details have changed!
- Tier 2 – Confirmed case in the community with no impact on the school or workplace. School response - No action required. The School will provide general communication to reassure the community and those at the workplace: School’s will use usual communication methods (ie. text message, email, app) to advise all staff and families of the situation.
- Tier 3 – Suspected case reports, in either the school or community, regarding close contacts which require further assessment or advice. An escalation protocol in place based on the triage assessment process.
School response - The CSO (in communication with NSW Public Health Unit) will advise the school in response.
Warm thanks to our families and staff for supporting each other as we move into Week 3 of Term 3.
We keep all families and individual people in our prayers that are either directly affected through COVID-19 or have associated challenges.
Please keep an eye out for each other. An offer of help can often provide as much to the sender as it does the receiver.
HEADLINES AND ANTHEMS - ?????? ??????
Dance has kicked off and we will be naming the second half of the title Monday morning. We have had some great options handed in by families and during Assembly on Monday morning, children will vote for which headline ending they think ’fits the bill.’
I would like to thank our teachers for the wonderful support given in assisting the planning and implementation of dances for our dance concert and particularly those teachers, who are giving up time during lunches to support Julie-Anne with our 5 Dance Eisteddfod teams.
TEACHERS HELPING KINDER FAMILIES TO GUIDE EARLY READING SKILLS
On Wednesday afternoon, Kinder teachers – Rani Tink, Maree Bennie, Di Doyle, Kylie Kipreotis and our AP/Learning, Karen Robson ran a zoom session for Kinder parents.
The zoom session focused on how parents/carers can best support early reading skills and to answer any questions parents/carers may have had in regard to reading mastery.
This is perhaps a timely moment to emphasise the critical importance of reading as the foundation for our children’s learning.
All teachers in recent communication have stressed the importance for children to engage in reading of an evening. It is the most important homework children will do.
Whilst listening or perhaps sharing the reading with your children, it is also a really good idea to stop on the odd occasion and ask questions (related to characters, plot or possible outcomes) to help the child go ‘deeper into the text.’ This will develop students capacity in comprehending the text and connecting this information to their life or other sources of experience and learning.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR OUR LEARNERS
Next week sees the introduction of a new staff member, Shane Priddis to support the learning goals of a number of our children.
Shane has diverse experience as an Additional Needs Teacher, Additional Needs Consultant and more recently, as a Coordinator of Learning Support in a Vietnamese International school.
We welcome Shane to St Peter’s and look forward to her sharing her energy and expertise in support of our little peoples’ learning goals.
MISSION
Religious Education in Year 6
Year 6 are studying Mary as a faithful disciple and model for the Church. To begin their exploration of women of faith and courage, we looked at the changing way women are depicted in the media, from devoted housewives in the 50’s and 60’s, to independent women of strength and courage today. The students researched positive images of women in the media and then described the character traits represented in these images: strength, courage, confidence, independence, persistence, and zest.
World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly - this Sunday:
On January 31, 2021, Pope Francis announced a new celebration in honour of all grandparents and the elderly, who are so important to our communities and our Church. This new World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday in July, coinciding with the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus, on July 26.
This year it falls on Sunday 25th July, with the theme, “I am with you always.”
In his message for the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Francis begins…
Dear Grandfathers and Grandmothers,
Dear Elderly Friends,
“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends. “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly.
The whole Church is close to you – to us – and cares about you,
loves you and does not want to leave you alone!
You can listen to the Holy Father reading the entire message himself by watching this video.

Confirmation Workshop
St Peter’s welcomed some of the students making their Sacrament of Confirmation in the St Agnes’ Parish on Tuesday afternoon for a workshop in preparation for the big day! We heard from Fr Paul Gooley, who spoke to us about this important step in our sacramental and faith journey, and participated in some activities that helped us understand what it means to belong and about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Many thanks to Fr Paul, Peta Rourke and the staff from St Peter’s who helped facilitate this valuable experience for the young people in our school and parish.
Vinnies #Family Winter Sleepout @ Home
Vinnies is inviting all families to be advocates for the Homeless this winter, hoping to raise funds and awareness about homelessness and disadvantage in our community. Please join us on July 30, in your very own home and:
- Make a card, write a message and attach it to a muesli bar/biscuit snack to be donated back at school, to be taken and shared on the streets by the Vinnies Night Patrol Van.
- Make soup together to drink to stay warm when out on your own sleep out/sit out. This is something that the Van usually distributes to those on the street.
- Sleep/Sit outside in the cold for a period of time, with only cardboard to sit on. During this time, discuss questions around how you are feeling, how the homeless must feel, as well as share some facts to raise awareness of Homelessness.
- Pray together as a family for those people in our community who have no secure, warm housing.
- Donate what you can through this fundraising page:
St Peter’s#Family Sleepout@Home
All money will assist Vinnies in providing support for those in our community who need it the most.
LEARNING
Putting Faces On The Data
Student Writing at St Peter’s
Staff at St Peter’s have continued to engage with renowned academic Lyn Sharratt, as part of our Precision in Our Practice initiative. Staff are focussed on improving all aspects of student writing, encouraging creativity, critical thinking while developing writing ability at word, sentence and whole text level.
The data wall in the image above, is used to inform instruction in writing as well as identify students who need extending and students who need extra input to accelerate their growth. Teachers are also able to identify students for Case Management Meetings, where teachers collaborate to plan teaching strategies for teachers to try out in the classroom.
In our Week 2 Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings, the data wall was updated by all of our teaching teams and we are very proud of the results our teachers and students have achieved. We look forward to further engaging in this process to continue to improve student writing at St Peter’s.
