OUR FEAST WEEK
Next week will see the celebration of our patron saint, St Peter.
St Peter is a great inspiration from which our culture continues to evolve.
He was certainly not the most correct or astute of Jesus’ followers, but no one could question his passion and final commitment to the call and follow up mission of Jesus. He was ‘the rock’ from which Jesus would build a remarkable following that continues to flourish.
Please see the article and our planned celebrations for his feast day/week under MISSION.
KIDS MAKING THEIR OWN FUN
I was walking around the playground on Wednesday during lunch time and noticed the amount of children engaging themselves in creative play.
There were children playing traditional games like handball, basketball, volleyball and having shots on the netball court, yet there were many children also engaged in make up play – children riding trikes on the pathway, senior girls conducting dance classes on our dance stage, senior students conducting clubs, girls doing limbo to music in a large cluster, children relaxing whilst playing games or reading books in the outdoor library, little ones running in and skipping and many of our children testing themselves on balance beams and other features of the sensory space.
Creative play is such an important feature in children’s learning and a wonderful outlet for their face to face socialisation.
Well done kids!
REPORTS HOME
Hard copies of Semester 1 reports were sent home with children today.
Please take the time to read through your children’s reports with them and acknowledge the wonderful successes in their learning.
Many of the children’s reports acknowledge their ability to persevere in their learning as well as celebrating their growth in resilience.
Guardians and parents can also access their child’s report through the Parent Portal. Through this portal you can see all past reports as well as the current progress report.
Parent Teacher interviews are next week.

HOUSE CUP WINNERS
Congratulations to SHELLY who are our House Cup winner for the last two terms. Shelly House members received the most vivo rewards for following our PBS expected behaviours in both Term 1 and Term 2 and received two prizes this week as the floods at the end of Term 1 prohibited them receiving their prize. The team voted to watch Dumbo (latest version) next Thursday in the middle session (11.30 - 1.30) and to come out of uniform. A note will go home to team members next week with further details.

ROAD SAFETY REMINDER
Our Traffic Controller, Vicki has been unavailable for the past two days.
We have been fortunate to have another attendant covering for this time. Vicki does such an outstanding job ensuring the safety of each family in a very busy traffic zone and it is important we continue to remain vigilant in this area to maximise the safety of our children when being ‘dropped off’ in the morning or ‘picked up’ of an afternoon.
The following links will help parents to highlight road safety aspects.
MISSION
St Peter’s Feast Day Next Friday!
The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul commemorates the martyrdoms of Peter the "chief of the apostles" and Paul the "apostle to the Gentiles,’ remembered for their faith, their courage, and their leadership during the difficult days of the birth of the Church. St Peter was one of the 12 apostles, as well as the first pope and founder of the Roman Church. When Jesus first met Peter, his name was Simon. Jesus recognised Simon as a leader. He changed his name to Peter, which means “rock.” Later, Jesus told Peter that he was to be the rock on which Jesus would build his Church. Peter was the first apostle to recognise that Jesus was the Messiah, the one promised by God to save his people. He gave up his life as a fisherman to lead others to Jesus, by being a fisher of men (Matthew 4:19) for Christ.
St Peter’s will celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul next Friday, the last day of Term 2. Parents and friends are invited to join us for Mass in the Don Farrell Hall at 9.30am, followed by some fun games and events on the oval, finishing with a shared picnic lunch from 11.30am-12.30pm. Please RSVP via the online form.
St Peter's Feast Day - RSVP online form
COVID check in will be required on the day.
Novena to St Peter O Holy Apostle, because you are the Rock upon which Almighty God has built His Church, obtain for me I pray you: lively faith, firm hope, and burning love, complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, recollection in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God and perseverance in the grace of God even unto death; that so, by means of your intercession and your glorious merits, I may be made worthy to appear before the Chief and Eternal Shepherd of Souls, Jesus Christ, Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns forever. Amen. |
LEARNING
Using coding skills to explore maths concepts
Nowadays, everything is computer aided from your alarm clock to your coffee machine to automated cars and even your home lights. None of these would have been possible without computers, and the language that runs them - coding. Coding, in simpler terms, means feeding our commands to the computer in a language the computer understands, so that the computer can carry out the said command, and perform the task.
A Sphero is a robot ball with several features that can be controlled through mobile apps. The Sphero can roll at a given speed and heading for a given amount of time. The Sphero can light up in any color. A Sphero connects to devices such iPads, iPhones, and Android phones and tablets through wireless Bluetooth connections.
Bee-Bots are a wonderful tool to teach students the fundamentals of computational thinking. The small robot can remember up to 40 commands consisting of forward, backwards and left and right movements to maneuver around the floor. The Bee-Bot allows students to create, explore, and problem solve to achieve success.
Year 2 have been using an iPad to code both Beebots and Spheros through obstacle courses to explore and extend their learning of the maths concept of position.

- Students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.
- Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms are strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received. Location of testing clinics are available via the NSW COVID-19 Testing Clinics website.
- All visitors to a school site must comply with sign-in arrangements. This includes the requirement to sign in at the school QR Code where they acknowledge that they will comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, each time you visit school.

Elective Sports- Years 1-6
On Wednesday 23rd June, at around 7.00pm, we will open our online registration for Years 1-6 Elective Sports
The Elective Sports program will run from Term 3, Week 4, and it will be a 5 week program. A text message with the CODE will be sent out to families next Tuesday 22nd June and bookings will open Wednesday 23rd June at around 7.00pm.
Please note: Dance Eisteddfod students as listed below won’t need to register as their rehearsal is their elective sport.
Some of the sports involve costs to cover entrance fee and bus fare. All activities are priced on minimum numbers. These prices may vary slightly to meet bus and or activity costs if numbers drop below the minimum numbers required after registration has closed.
Please ensure you receive a confirmation email once you have booked your child/ren’s sports. If you do not receive an email confirming your booking, you will need to book another sport, as that particular sport is full.
As this is new for many Year 1 families and new families to our school, if families would like further information about Elective Sports and its process, please feel free to contact me on jeff.arkinstall@lism.catholic.edu.au.
An Invoice and Permission note will be sent home to all families after your Elective Sport selection is confirmed.
Permission notes and FULL payment for any paid sports (via Bpay, Direct Credit, EFTPOS, or Cash) will be due by the end of Term 3 Week 2 to confirm a place in your child's selected sport.

Year 3 Lake Cathie Designs
Calling All Scientists!
As a part of our Unit entitled, ‘The Earth’s Surface’, Year 3 undertook a design project. The design brief required them to devise a solution to the erosion problem at Lake Cathie.
The students have been learning about erosion and weathering. They have been investigating different solutions and methods to prevent and slow down erosion.
They firstly established multiple solutions to the problem and finally, they had to choose their best solution (probably a combination of ideas from their different solutions) and complete a ‘Final Design’.
On Tuesday, the students then made models of Lake Cathie (based on their Final Design), using recyclables and other bits and pieces from around the home and/or garden to construct their models. We were so impressed with their models-definitely some future engineers in the making.
Some of the strategies the students used to slow down erosion were planting vegetation, using retaining walls and geotextiles. They then tested how well the models withstood the pressure of water. The results were so amazing! Some of the models withstood ten cups of water.
We were also so impressed with how engaged the students were, how prepared they were and their excellent ‘Working Scientifically’ and ‘Design and Production’ skills. The final component of the task was to complete an evaluation of their model. Students confidently explained what worked/what didn’t, the challenges they faced and modifications that they would make for the future.
Enjoy the photos of your mini geologists, environmental engineers and soils scientists!
Year 4 Food Clay Art
Let's eat!
An amazing two weeks in Year 4 has seen students create some amazing food clay art. Students developed concept drawings of their food clay and then cut, rolled, flattened and painted their food clay to produce food clay masterpieces.
